Role Overview

The focus of the position is to work with male and female tenants who have experienced chronic homelessness, to maintain supported housing with a focus on supporting clients currently experiencing hoarding or other life skills challenges. Staff strive to encourage tenant participation in the development of short- and long-term goals, community development strategies, using a facilitative management approach to promote independent living and the safety and enjoyment of their housing. This position requires respect for, and expertise working with, tenants who are facing varying degrees of mental and physical health, active substance use, trauma and social isolation and who come from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. 

About the Team

Bailey House is a supportive housing program that provides rent-subsidized accommodation and support for 17 men living with mental health challenges and co-occurring diabetes or pre-diabetic conditions. Each tenant has his own bedroom, a bathroom, and shares a communal kitchen with other tenants.

The Supportive Housing Worker supports tenants to maintain their housing, develop independent living skills, achieve mental health stability and pursue personal recovery.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to promote adequate care for the clients.
  • Manage medication and mediate client mental and physical care.
  • Support/encourage clients in activities of daily living.
  • Advocate with and on behalf of clients to improve and or maintain wellbeing and benefits.
  • Create, maintain and improve a healthy working relationship with the client and their circle of care.

The Successful Candidates Require:

  • A minimum of a Community College Diploma in a field relevant to the target population. Higher level post-secondary education will be considered an asset.
  • A minimum of 2 years direct or transferable experience suitable to working effectively with the relevant target population.
  • Knowledge of community resources relevant to the target population being served and/or demonstrated ability to search for applicable resources/information.
  • Ability to design and implement group activities and facilitate group meetings.
  • Good crisis management and dispute resolution skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Basic computer literacy (Word, E-mail, Internet).
  • Experience in community mental health and/or in supportive housing settings.
  • Basic understanding of different psychiatric conditions.
  • Experience with the development of tenant recovery plans.
  • Experience working with developmentally delayed or addiction is preferable.

Other Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Please note that the site location includes stairs and the role may require lifting of objects.
